Delicious offers users a social way to store their favorite URLs and online resources. The website is intended for bookmarking. The user can create an account and store all of their favorite websites in one place. Visitors can also check out recently added bookmarks, a hot list of popular bookmarks and bookmark tags. Each listing shows the user related tags assigned to the bookmark, the name of the bookmark, how many related Tweets have been posted (with a link to those) and the source of the bookmark. A search tool is also presented that allows users to search bookmarks for specific keywords. Each bookmark includes a save or share feature that lets users pass the URL along or save it for access later.
Delicious first started out on the web as a link blog named Muxway. Muxway was born out of a text file maintained by Schachter, which was used to track Mempool links. In September of 2003, the first incarnation of Delicious was officially released. The creator quit his job to focus on Delicious full time by March of 2005. On December 9th, 2005, Delicious was acquired by Yahoo. It was later sold to Avos Systems on April 27th, 2011. AVOS is owned by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.
Delicious provides users with a number of links to explore as well as a way to save their favorite URLs. What makes Delicious unique from other social bookmarking websites is its size and age. The application has been around for several years and has gained a significant following in that time frame.
The Delicious website uses a rich green and blue color scheme offset by white, black and grey as found in the square site logo. Visitors to the homepage are greeted by a wide, solid banner with silhouettes that explain the site using short, creatively worded text. Below, the user can find three tabs to toggle between recently added, popular and tagged bookmarks. Each tab shows the user a list of corresponding bookmarks with a small screenshot of the site, related tags, Tweets and other tidbits.
A new user can create a Delicious account by clicking the green “Join Now” button found in the upper, right hand corner of the page. The registration form appears on the following page and asks the user to provide a first and last name, email address, username and password. The user must also successfully enter a Captcha code to prove that they are human. Two boxes are available at the bottom of the form which must be clicked before submitting the information. The top box confirms the user’s agreement with the Yahoo terms of service and privacy policy while the second one confirms their agreement with the Avos terms and policies.
Delicious is a popular site partially because it is available to everyone for free. All users can create an account and begin saving and exploring bookmarks at no cost. There are no subscription fees and no purchases are required to maintain an account. All users are given the same level of access as soon as they sign up.
Delicious is ideal for anyone who manages a number of bookmarks as well as those who enjoy exploring the web. Users can share their finds and discover new websites that they might not have been aware of.
